Who the hell is Tarchon?
A brief history lesson
Tarcon or Tarconte (Tarchon the english translation) is an Etruscan name.
In their early days, the Etruscans dwelt in the lands of Tuscany and nothern Lazio; greek and latin historical
sources speak of an Etruscan civilization toward the Po valley that brought to the foundation of a League of Twelve
Towns. One of those town, centuries ahead, would become Bologna.
According to the historical documentation, Tarchon was the founder of those 12 towns, at the beginning of the
Iron Age (IX cen. b.C.).
At about the half ov the VI century, Etruscans loose their dominion above the Tyrrhenian Sea, due
to the Greek and Carthaginian expansion. This brings a completely new setting of the political and economical
structure of the Etruscan kingdom; commerce with the central Europe and Greece grows, new towns born, old settlements are
re-founded, as happens to Felsina, today known as Bologna, that immediately becomes the fulcrum of this
new system.
Tarchon appears also in ancient literature: in the Aeneid, Tarchon is a king, master of the Etruscan League,
a warrior and a priest, and according to some Greek authors, he is kin to Hercules.
And there is a divine aspect of the name Tarchon.
Latin authors agree to say that Etruscan were very religious, very skilled in the art of divination. They had a
set of tight rules that managed the relations between men and gods (the "Etruscan Discipline").
We also know that they believed teir religion was revealed by some superior beings, such as Tagete, the child, and
Vegoe, the nymph.
Among the early Etruscan, gods have no definite aspect, maybe we can suppose there was an single divine entity,
who used to appear in different ways. But between VIII and VI century b.C. the Etruscan religion changes: new
gods are importedrom Greece, and the older ones take a human and definitive form, such as in the Classical
Olympus.
The older gods of the Etruscan represented the basic forces of nature, destroyers and creators at the same time:
Tarchon was the god of rain, bringing life to the land but also raging in the storm.
